Vessel Walkthrough
BEAR is a wonderful cruising platform that combines the best of a great functional design classical styling and long range comfort. Designed by naval architect James Krogen the 42 Kadey Krogen enjoyed production from 1977 until 1998 with a total of 203 yachts being built. BEAR is hull # 100.The hull and cabin sides of the Krogen 42 are of fiberglass sandwich construction and heavy hand lay-up using mat and roving. The composite structure serves both as a buoyancy material and shock sound and temperature insulator. It provides a quiet ride increases the impact strength and eliminates moisture build-up inside the hull. Her construction is definitely rugged. With truly salty lines she is a proven long range cruiser. The 42 Krogens are known for all of their abundant storage. It is said that a 42 can swallow 5000 lbs. of stuff and never get indigestion. Her ballasted displacement hull was designed to resist rolling and is known for being self-righting at more than 85 degrees making for an extremely sea kindly hull. The high bow combined with the fine entry minimizes pounding in head seas and her long keel allows her to track well. Full prop protection combined with a shallow draft allows for great gunk holing. The naturally aspirated 135 horsepower Lehman and electric bow and stern thrusters make BEAR very easy to maneuver in tight quarters.Stepping aboard BEAR one sees that she has a unique deck design. From the bow pulpit to just past the dual pilothouse doors the foredeck is raised three easy steps above the side decks and the aft deck. The foredeck is nice and clear and provides easy access to the anchor pulpit. There is a great built in storage locker located just under the pilot house windows on the fore deck which also doubles as a bow seat. The decks of Bear were originally ordered with teak covering boards. At the time of this writing there are no reported deck leaks. Proceeding aft one finds a great comfortable spot to sit on the screened enclosed aft deck. There is room for a couple of arm chairs and two tables. A large deck hatch provides access to the lazerette storage and the steering flats. Access to the bridge is up a stainless steel ladder. The bridge has a very large hatch to make it easy to get onto the bridge. There is a central helmsmans seat with fore and aft storage boxes on either side. An aluminum mast is installed on a tabernacle just aft of the helm seat giving BEAR a bridge clearance of 148 with the mast down. The boom with its electric winch is used for launching and retrieving the Avon RIB with its 8 hp. Nissan. The bridge deck is factory non-skid. The cruising skirts and the bimini as well as the bridge covers are blue canvas. Entering the salon of BEAR thru the double teak doors one finds a very comfortable entertaining and living area. Free standing furniture includes a supple leather sofa (2010) to starboard and two leather arm chairs with matching leather footstools to port. Not only is there 66 headroom in the salon but there are also large sliding windows on both sides of the salon. On the port side one finds the infamous Krogen teak table with its four chairs snugly tucked inside. The satin finished teak woodwork found throughout BEAR is in excellent condition as is the teak parquet flooring and the head liner. A flat screen TV is mounted on the forward galley buffet for easy viewing. The U-shaped galley has lots of storage and is located forward on the starboard side of the yacht. An electric three-burner Princess stove with oven is located on the starboard wall under a large round opening port light. Double stainless steel sinks Formica counters and the best of all a custom Beard Marine side by side refrigerator and freezer with cold plates and 6 of insulation. A small but new microwave is located near the fridge/freezer. Across from the galley is located the main electrical panel remote genset panel and abundant storage. Up a short set of stairs and you find yourself in the pilothouse. The pilothouse is a great place to nap read and/or complete a project offers a commanding view full controls and navigation equipment chart drawers storage drawers and a lot of storage compartments. Dutch type doors provide easy access to the decks ground tackle and provide great versatility to ventilation. The focal point of this great pilothouse is the new blue Stidd helm seat. All of your electronics bow and stern thruster controls right at your fingertips. The forward windows all have wipers and the center one is an opening window. There is a passage berth located aft in the pilothouse. Down a couple of stairs from the galley and you will find two staterooms with ensuite heads that both have separate shower stalls. The master is all the way forward and offers an abundant amount of storage as well as a double berth to starboard with a single berth above it. There are three opening port lights two deck prisms and a deck hatch which allow for lots of natural light. A dresser to port and a hanging locker will ensure that you have room to put away all of your goodies. Through the shower there is excellent chain locker access. The Vacu-flush heads have a Purasan sanitation system which allows for overboard discharge. The mid-stateroom is actually an office/stateroom. There is a very comfortable single berth to starboard with book shelves above it and a large teak desk to port. A Pullman berth allows you to have a couple of guests in this stateroom. Once again there is lots of storage opening ports and a hanging locker. Opposite the stateroom is a large head with separate shower stall that even has a seat in it. Great storage is found above and below the stainless steel sink.Next to the day head/guest head is a new Splendide 2100 washer/dryer. No need to drag the clothes to a public laundry.BEAR offers the best in cruising comforts in her size range. Without a doubt one of the largest 42s ever built. If you want to cruise economically BEAR is for you. In 12 hours of cruising at 10 mph (1800 rpm) she burns 12 gallons.
